Ladakh Marathon is promoted and organised by High Altitude Sports Foundation Ladakh, a not-for Profit Private non-Government company incorporated on the 7th day of March 2024 under the Companies Act, 2013, Government of India, Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The objective of High Altitude Sports Foundation Ladakh is to encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle through sports such as running and other sporting activities in the region of Ladakh.

Chewang Motup Goba is the Chairperson of High Altitude Sports Foundation. He is also a Padma Shri awardee for his distinguished services that pioneered adventure sports in Ladakh and put them on the global map, from the likes of Ladakh Marathon to Ice Hockey and the Chadar trek.

In the year 1992, Chewang Motup along with his wife Yangdu Gombu co-founded Rimo Expeditions, that has become today India’s foremost adventure travel company. Rimo Expeditions was awarded with the National Tourism Award for two consecutive years as “Best Adventure Tour Operator” by the Government of India, Ministry of Tourism.

In the year 2003, Chewang managed to get 50 sets of ice hockey equipment for Ladakh Winter Sports Club with the help of NHLPA (National Hockey League Players Association) of Canada. This was the first set of ice hockey equipment to arrive in India which has gone a long way in developing the sport of Ice Hockey in Ladakh and India.

In the year 2012, two years after the devastating flash floods tore through the region of Ladakh leaving a trail of death and destruction, Chewang Motup founded and organised the inaugural Ladakh Marathon, and it was a way to say that “Ladakh is back and running”. The Event became a full member of AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) in 2015, thus becoming a key stop on the global marathon calendar! Today, Ladakh Marathon is a composite of six sub events offering challenges from the easy 05km Run for Fun to 122km Silk Route Ultra.

At High Altitude Sports Foundation Ladakh, our vision is to provide a platform to the young athletes of Ladakh, who have a natural advantage in endurance sports, to realize their potential and dreams, not just in distance running but other sports such as boxing, ice hockey, mountaineering, triathlons etc.
